Toast notification
The toast nudge is a small, non-blocking notification that delivers a short social-proof or urgency message — the lightest touch in the elNudge suite.
The toast notification is the lightest nudge type elNudge can show. It is a small, non-blocking message that appears briefly, delivers a single piece of information, and disappears on its own — no interaction required.
What it looks like
- Position: bottom-right (or top-right — configurable in the dashboard). Never overlaps your main content.
- Appearance: a compact pill or card with a short single-line message. No avatar, no full chat UI.
- Auto-dismiss: the toast disappears automatically after 5 seconds if the visitor does not interact with it.
- On click: clicking anywhere on the toast opens the full chat panel, with the agent's opening message pre-loaded.
- No click: if the visitor ignores it, it fades out after 5 seconds. This does not count as a dismissal toward the 2-dismissal silence rule.
Example messages
The AI writes the message content based on live session context and product data. Typical messages:
| Context | Example message |
|---|---|
| High concurrent viewers | "8 people are viewing this right now" |
| Low stock | "Only 3 left in stock" |
| Shipping incentive | "Free shipping — you're $12 away" |
| Return visit | "Welcome back — your cart is still saved" |
| Idle on product page | "Any questions? I'm happy to help" |
You do not write these messages manually. The AI generates them from your product catalog, store context, and the visitor's live session data. You can influence the tone by configuring your AI Persona (see below).
When the AI uses a toast vs a chat bubble
The AI chooses the nudge type based on the intent signal and the current session state:
| Signal | Likely nudge type |
|---|---|
| Low-urgency, early in session | Toast |
| High intent, long page dwell | Chat bubble |
| Cart removal | Chat bubble |
| Exit intent | Exit modal |
| At checkout | Sticky bar (always-on) |
Toasts are preferred when the AI wants to deliver a light-touch message without committing the visitor to a full conversation. If the visitor clicks the toast and opens chat, the conversation quality is typically higher because the visitor self-selected.
Session nudge limit
The toast counts against the session nudge limit of 3 nudges per session. Once 3 nudges have fired in a session (across all types that count against the limit), no further nudges appear.
Dismissal rule: if the visitor actively dismisses a nudge (clicking ✕), that counts toward the 2-dismissal silence threshold. A toast that auto-dismisses after 5 seconds without interaction does not count as a dismissal.
Enable or disable toast notifications
You can enable or disable individual nudge types per site:
- Go to app.elnudge.com → your site → Engagement Rules.
- Under Nudge types, toggle Toast notification on or off.
Disabling the toast means the AI will never show a toast nudge. It will fall back to other enabled nudge types (chat bubble, etc.) when it would otherwise have shown a toast.
Configure the toast position
In app.elnudge.com → your site → Engagement Rules → Toast position, choose:
- Bottom-right (default) — consistent with the chat bubble position
- Top-right — useful if your site has a persistent bottom bar or cookie banner
Anti-spam rules
The same session-level rules that apply to all nudge types apply to toasts:
| Rule | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Max 3 nudges per session | No further nudges after 3 have been shown |
| Silence after 2 dismissals | Agent goes quiet if the visitor dismisses 2 nudges |
| Quiet zones | No nudges on pages listed as quiet zones |
Configure the agent persona
Toast message copy is generated by the AI using your AI Persona settings. To adjust tone:
Go to app.elnudge.com → your site → AI Persona:
- Tone — Professional, Friendly, or Casual
- Agent name — used in messages that reference the agent directly
See the AI Persona guide for full configuration options.
